From Demolition to Deconstruction
In the following video, Michel Baars, founder of the company New Horizon, discusses urban mining and how his company is driven away from the linear practices of demolition towards, a more controlled deconstruction process using less machines and more people. Their ultimate aim, he says, is to retrieve materials in a way that allows them to be reused.
In the video, Michel Baars described how current technologies allow the reuse of gravel from demolition to the production of new concrete. Here is a video discussing the SmartLiberator(R) : the technology that allows to retrieve the gravel from concrete to reused in new constructions.
TU Delft and the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment was involved in a similar line of research with the SeRaMCo project: the aim of the project was to determine applications for reused concrete. A consortium of knowledge institutions and companies from the Benelux countries, France and Germany developed different recipes. Want to know the products developed by TU Delft? Read this story!
